10. これやこの 行くも帰るも 別れては 知るも知らぬも 逢坂の関
↑逢坂の関で行き交う人々を眺めるレオン。

上の句…これやこの ゆくもかえるも わかれては
The first half…Kore ya kono yuku mo kaeru mo wakarete wa
下の句…しるもしらぬも おうさかのせき
The second half…Shiru mo shiranu mo ousakanoseki
現代訳…都から東国へ向かう人も、都へ帰る人も、顔見知りの人も、見知らぬ人も…みなここ逢坂の関で出会っては別れていく。
Modern Translation …Whether they are traveling from the capital to the eastern provinces or returning to the capital, whether they know one another or are complete strangers… everyone meets and parts ways here at the Osaka Barrier.
解説…「行く⇔帰る」「知る⇔知らぬ」「逢う⇔別れる」と反対語を重ね、人が多く行き交う場所で人生の出会いと別れを表現しています。
Explanation …By pairing contrasting words such as “going/returning,” “knowing/not knowing,” and “meeting/parting,” this poem expresses the encounters and farewells of life at a place bustling with travelers.
「これが名前の通り、人の出会いと別れの場所である逢坂の関なんだなぁ…」という感慨を読んだ歌なのです。
The poet reflects on the place, thinking, “So this really is the Osaka Barrier, a place where people meet and part, just as its name suggests…”
「逢坂の関」とは、当時の山城国(京都)と近江国(滋賀)の国境に置かれた関所のこと。
The Osaka Barrier was a checkpoint located on the border between Yamashiro Province (Kyoto) and Ōmi Province (Shiga) at the time.
東国から京都へ入る時の交通や軍事・経済の上で特に重要な地点で、和歌や物語にもよく登場する地名です。
It was a particularly important location for transportation, military affairs, and commerce when entering Kyoto from the eastern provinces. The place name also frequently appears in Japanese poetry and tales.
※蝉丸(生没年不明)とは？…平安時代前期の歌人。盲目の僧で琵琶の名手だったという伝承がある。
Who was Semimaru (dates of birth and death unknown) ?……A poet from the early Heian period. According to legend, he was a blind Buddhist monk and a master of the biwa, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.
