Leon’s Hyakunin Isshu♪ 【２. Empress Jitō】
２. 春すぎて 夏来にけらし 白妙の 衣ほすてふ 天の香具山
↑白妙の衣を干すレオン。
Leon hangs the pure white garments out to dry.
それを遠くから眺めて、夏を感じるジル(持統天皇💧) 。
Watching him from afar, Jill (Empress Jitō💧) senses the arrival of summer.
上の句…はるすぎて なつきにけらし しろたえの
The first half…haru sugite natsu kini kerashi shirotae no
下の句…ころもほすてふ あまのかぐやま
The second half…koromo hosuchō ama no kaguyama
現代語訳「いつの間にか春が過ぎて、夏になったらしい。真っ白な衣を干すという、その天の香具山を見るとそう感じる。」
Modern translation…It seem that spring has passed before I even realized it, and summer has arrived.
When I look at Mount Kagu, where those pure white robes and said to be hung out to dry, I el that summer has come.
解説 「春が過ぎて」はそのままの意味。
“Spring has passed” simply means exactly what it says.
「夏来けらし」の「けらし」は「～らしい」「～のようだ」という推定を表す言葉。
The “kerashi” in “natsu ki ni kerashi” expresses an inference, meaning “it seems that…” or “apparently…”
つまり、読み手の持統天皇は「夏が来た！」と断定しているわけではなく、何かを見て夏の到来を感じています。
In other words, the speaker, Empress Jitō, is not stating with certainty, “Summer has arrived！” Rather, she sees something that makes her feel that summer has come.
それは「白妙の衣」。
That something is “shirotae no koromo.”
「白妙」とは、「真っ白な」という意味。
“Shirotae” means “pure white.”
「白妙の衣」とは、「真っ白で清らかな衣」のこと。
“Shirotae no koromo” refers to “pure white, pristine garments.”
次の句の「衣ほすてふ」。
Next comes the phrase “koromo hosu chō.”
「衣ほす」＝衣干す。「てふ」＝という。
“Koro-mo hosu” means ” to hang clothes out to dry,” while “chō” means “called” or “said to be.”
つまり、「衣を干すという」という意味。
In other words, the phrase means “where they say the clothes are hung out to dry.
実はこの「衣」は単なる洗濯物ではなく、古代の生活・農耕・祭祀などとも関係する神聖な衣として考えられます。
In fact, these “garments” are thought to have been sacred clothing associated with ancient life, agriculture, and religious rituals, rather than simply ordinary laundry,
それを遠目で見てもたくさん干されているのが分かる…それほど干されている＝夏によく見る光景。
Even from a distance, you could tell that many of them were hanging out to dry.
In other words, there were so many garments being dried that it must have been a familiar sight in summer.
そして、最後の「天の香具山」。
And finally, we come to “Ama no Kagu-yama.”
奈良県に実際にある大和三山の１つ…香具山のこと。
It refers to Mount Kagu, one of the Three Mountains of Yamato, which actually stands in Nare Prefecture.
古代大和の人々にとって、とても神聖な山でした。
To the people of ancient Yamato, it was a deeply sacred mountain.
「天の」という言葉が付いていることで、その特別感が伝わりますね。
The addition of the word “Ama no,” meaning “heavenly,” conveys just how special and sacred the mountain was.
山の緑 ＋ 白い布の美しいコントラストを称えた歌なのです。
This poem celebrates the beautiful contrast between the lush green of the mountain and the pure white garments spread out to dry.
※持統天皇(じとうてんのう)とは？…日本の第41代天皇(645～703) 。天智天皇の娘。史上３人目の女性天皇。
Who was Empress Jitō？…She was the 41st emperor of Japan (645－703) and the daughter of Emperor Tenji. She was the third woman to ascend to Japan’s imperial throne.
天武天皇の後を受けて、律令国家づくりを進めて、法と戸籍を整えた。
After succeeding Emperor Tenmu, she continued efforts to establish a centralized state based on the ritsuryō system, helping to develop the legal system and establish a national household registration system.
694年に藤原京へ都を移し、皇位継承を安定させた。
In 694, she moved the capital to Fujiwara-kyō, helping to stabilize the succession to the imperial throne.
藤原京 → 現在の奈良県橿原市(かしはら)辺り。
Fujiwara-kyō was located in what is now the area around Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture.
