Leon’s Hyakunin issyu♪ 【７. Abe no Nakamaro】

７. 天の原ふりさけ見れば春日なる三笠の山に出でし月かも

↑異国の「唐」で月を眺めながら、同じ月が見えてるであろう故郷を思うレオン。

Leon gazes at the moon in the foreign land of Tang China, thinking of his homeland, where the very same moon must be shining.

上の句…あまのはらのふりさけみればかすがなる

The first half…Ama no hara no furisake mireba kasuga naru

下の句…みかさのやまにいでしつきかも

The second half…mikasa no yama ni ideshi tuki kamo

現代訳…天を仰いではるか遠くを眺めると、月が昇っている。あれは、故郷の奈良の春日にある三笠山に昇っていたのと同じ月なのだろうか。

Modern translation…When I look up at the vast sky, gazing far into the distance, I see the moon rising.

Could it be the very same moon that once rose over Mount Mikasa in Kasuga, Nara, back in my homeland？

解説…「天の原ふりさけ見れば」は、「広々とした大空を、はるか遠くに仰ぎ見ると」という意味。

Explanation…’Amanohara furisake mireba’ means ‘When I gaze far into the distance, looking up at the vast expanse of the sky…’

「春日」は、現在の奈良市周辺にあたる場所。

‘Kasuga’ refers to the area around what is now Nara City.

そして、「三笠山」は、現在の若草山のこと。

And ‘Mount Mikasa’ is what is now known as Mount Wakakusa.

仲麻呂にとっては、故郷・奈良を象徴する場所なのです。

For Nakamaro, this place symbolized his homeland of Nara.

仲麻呂がその時見ている「月」は、もちろん故郷でも見た「同じ月」。

The ‘moon’ he sees at that moment is, of course, the very same moon he once saw back home.

何年も日本を離れていたけれど、空を見上げれば、故郷と同じ月を見ることが出来るじゃあないか！…と、単純に「日本が恋しい！」だけではなく、強い望郷の念が感じられる歌なのです。

Even though he had been away from Japan for so many years, he realizes that if he looks up at the sky, he can still see the very same moon that shines over his homeland.

This poem expresses not merely a simple longing for Japan, but a much deeper and more powerful yearning for his homeland.

そして、この歌は仲麻呂が日本に帰国できる機会を得て、その送別の宴で詠んだ歌だとされています。

This poem is said to have been composed at a farewell banquet when Nakamaro was given the opportunity to return to Japan.

しかし、これには悲しい後日談があって、仲麻呂は帰国するための航海中に船が遭難💦

However, there’s a tragic sequel to this story…While sailing back to Japan, Nakamaro’s ship was caught in a terrible storm and wrecked💦

その事故で生き延びはしたものの、最後まで日本には戻ることはできなかったんですね…💧

Although he survived the shipwreck, he was never able to return to Japan…💧

…その事実を知ると、余計に切ない歌に感じます😢 …仲麻呂よ💧

Knowing how his story ended makes this poem feel even more heartbreaking😢…Oh, Nakamaro…💧

※安部仲麿(698～770)とは？…奈良時代の遣唐使。「朝衡/昇衡(ちょうこう)」という名で唐の国家試験に合格し、唐朝の高官まで登ったが、日本への帰国を果たせず唐で死去した。ちなみに小倉百人一首では「安部仲麿」と表記される。

Who was Abe no Nakamaro (698－770) ？…Abe no Nakamaro was a Japanese envoy to Tang China during the Nara period.

In China, he went by the name Chōkō, passed the imperial examinations, and rose to a high-ranking position in the Tang goverment.

However, he was never able to return to Japan and eventually died in China.

Incidentally, his name is written as ‘安部仲麿’ in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

「…あ…あまのはら …ふりさけみれば…グ～スカ」

“…A-ama no hara …Furisake mireba…zzz…”
