Leon’s Hyakunin issyu♪ 【５. Saru maru dayū】
５. 奥山に 紅葉踏みわけ 鳴く鹿の 声きく時ぞ 秋は悲しき
↑紅葉真っ盛りの奥山で鳴く雄鹿の声を聞いて、悲しみがなお一層深くなるレオン。
Leon’s sadness deepens even further as he listens to the cry of a stag in the mountains, surrounded by autumn leaves in their full glory.
上の句…おくやまに もみじふみわけ なくしかの
The first half…okuyama ni momiji fumiwake naku shika no
下の句…こえきくときぞ あきはかなしき
The second half…koe kiku toki zo aki wa kanashiki
現代訳…人里離れた奥山で、散り敷かれた紅葉を踏み分けながら、雌鹿が恋しいと鳴いている雄鹿の声を聞く時こそ、いよいよ秋は悲しいものだと感じられる。
Modern translation…It is when, deep in the mountains far from human habitation, I hear the cry of a stag calling for his beloved doe as he makes his way through the fallen autumn leaves, that I truly feel how sorrowful autumn can be.
解説…「奥山」とは、人里離れた深い山のことです。つまりこの時点で、「静寂」や「孤独」が感じられます。
Explanation…”Okuyama” refers to a deep mountain far from human habitation.
In other words, we can already sense a feeling of silence and solitude at this point.
「紅葉踏み分け」は、雄鹿が散った紅葉が地面いっぱいに敷き詰められた道を歩いている様子。
“Momiji furiwake” describes a stag walking along a path covered with fallen autumn leaves.
「鳴く鹿の」は、秋の季節には雄鹿が雌を求めて鳴く習性があるとされており、そこに遠く離れた妻や恋人を想い慕う感情を重ねています。
“Crying stag” refers to the belief that, in autumn, male deer call out for females.
The poem then overlaps this natural behavior with the longing one feels for a wife or lover who is far away.
「声を聞くときぞ」の「ぞ」は強調の係助詞。
The “zo” in “koe wo kiku toki zo” is an emphatic particle.
「鹿の声を聞いたから悲しい」というだけではなく、他の季節にも同じように鹿は鳴くけど、特に「秋は！」という…次の句の「秋は悲しき」を引き立てているのです。
It’s not that hearing the stag’s cry makes the poet feel sad.
Deer may call out in other seasons as well, but it is especially in autumn that the sound evokes a sense of sorrow.
In this way, “zo” emphasizes the following phrase, “aki wa kanashiki” (“autumn is sorrowful”).
「秋にこの鳴き声を聞くからこそ、余計に悲しい」…なのです。
It is precisely because we hear this sound in autumn that it feels all the more sorrowful.
そして、秋 ＝ 悲しい…と、日本では昔から捉えられがち。
In Japan, autumn has traditionally been associated with sadness and melancholy.
木の葉が枯れる…夜が長い…などから連想して「衰え・静けさ」を感じさせる季節で、人間の心の寂しさまで呼び起こされてしまうからなんですね💦
This is because the falling leaves and longer nights of autumn evoke a sense of decline and stillness, which in turn awakens feelings of loneliness in the human heart💦
※猿丸大夫とは？(生年不詳)…猿丸は名、大夫とは五位以上の階位を得ている者の称。山背大兄王の三男ともいわれ、聖徳太子の子孫だったとされる。三十六歌仙のひとり。
Who was Sarumaru dayū (birth date unknown) ？…”Sarumaru” was his personal name, while “Dayū” was a title used for someone who had attained the fifth rank or higher.
He is said to have been the third son of Prince Yamashiro no Ōe and a descendant of Prince Shōtoku.
He is also counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets of Japan.
