３. あしびきの山鳥の尾のしだり尾のながながし夜をひとりかも寝む

↑「ひとりかも寝む」レオン💧

Leon has to sleep alone💧

ひとり寝の長さを、山鳥の尾の長さに喩えて…悲しんでいます💦

He laments how long a lonely night feels, comparing it to the long, drooping tail feathers of a copper pheasant💦

※山鳥(やまどり)とは？…キジ目キジ科ヤマドリ属に分類される鳥類。日本の固有種。

What is a copper pheasant？…A bird belonging to the pheasant family, Phasianidae, in the order Galliformes. It is endemic to Japan.

尾は雄の方がかなり長く41.５～95.2cm。雌が16.4～20.5cmあります。

The male’s tail is considerably longer, measuring 41.5-95.2cm, while the female’s measures 16.4-20.5cm.

上の句…あしびきのやまどりのおのしだりおの

The first half…Ashibiki no Yamadori no o no shidari o no

下の句…ながながしよをひとりかもねむ

The second half…Naganagashi yo wo Hitori kamo nemu

現代語訳「山鳥の長く垂れた尾のように、長い長い夜を私は恋しい人と離れて、ひとりで寝るのだろうか。」

Modern translation…”Will I spend this long, long night alone, separated from the one I love, like the long, drooping tail feathers of a copper pheasant？”

解説…山鳥の尾の長さをひとりで過ごす夜の長さに重ねて、寂しさがとても強く表現されています。

Explanation…The length of the copper pheasant’s tail is compared to the seemingly endless length of a night spent alone, vividly expressing the speaker’s profound loneliness.

「ながながし夜」→「ひとりで寝る」＝「愛する人と一緒にいられない寂しさ」を表し、「寝む」は、「ひとりで寝ることになるのだろうか？」という、ためらいや嘆きが感じられる表現…つまり、「今夜もひとりなのか…」という切ない気持ちでもあります。

‘A long, long night’ → ‘sleeping alone’ ＝ ‘the loneliness of being unable to be with the one I love.’

The word ‘nemu’ conveys a sense of hesitation and sorrow, as if asking, ‘Will I really have to spend the night alone？’

In other words, it expresses the poignant feeling of, ‘Am I going to be alone again tonight…？’

「あしびきの～」は「山」へつながる枕詞です。

’Ashibiki no…’ is a makurakotoba (a traditional poetic epithet) associated with the word ‘mountain.’

※柿本人麻呂(生年不詳…おおよそ660～720頃)とは？…飛鳥時代の歌人。後世、山部赤人と共に歌聖と呼ばれ、三十六歌仙のひとりとして称えられている。

Who was Kakinomoto no Hitomaro (date of birth unknown, believed to have lived around 660-720) ？…He was a poet of the Asuka period.

In later generations, he came to be revered as a ‘Sage of Poetry’ alongside Yamabe no Akahito and was honored as one of the Thirty-Six lmmortal Poets.

※三十六歌仙(さんじゅうろっかせん)とは？…藤原公任の「三十六人撰」に載っている平安時代の和歌の名人36人の総称。

What are the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets？…They are the collective name for 39 masterful waka poets of the Heian period who were included in Fujiwara no Kintō’s anthology, Sanjūrokunin Sen (‘Selection of Thirty-Six Poets’).
