Leon’s Hyakunin issyu♪ 【７. Kisen hōshi】
Leon, dressed as the monk Kisen Hōshi, is living quite comfortably in a secluded place far from the hustle and bustle of society, contrary to all the rumors going around.
He’s appalled by how foolishly people spread rumors without caring whether they’re true or not.
Incidentally, even after becoming a monk, Leon’s hairstyle remains unchanged💧
The first half…Waga io wa miyako no tatsumi shikazo sumu
The second half…yo wo ujiyama to hito wa iunari
Modern translation…” My humble dwelling lies on the southeastern outskirts of the capital, where I live a quiet and peaceful life like this.
And yet, people seem to say, “He lives in the mountains of Uji, having withdrawn from the world out of sorrow for its troubles.”
Explanation… “My humble hut” refers to the small hermitage where the monk Kisen Hōshi lives.
“Tatsumi” indicates the southeast direction. In ancient Japan, the twelve zodiac signs were used to represent directions, so southeast lay halfway between Tatsu (the Dragon) and Mi (the Snake).
In “shikazo sumu,” shika (然) means “in this way” or “thus,” implying “even though I live here so peacefully and quietly.”
In “yo o Ujiyama to,” Uji is a pivot word that refers both to Uji (present-day Uji City in Kyoto Prefecture) and to ushi, meaning “painful” or “miserable.”
In “hito wa iu nari,” hito means people in general, or society at large.
The particle wa carries a subtle implication of “although I don’t see it that way myself…”
In other words, this poem reveals Kisen Hōshi’s wry amusement as he observes how people tend to view those who behave differently from others as strange, and how they simply love to gossip about them！
“Honestly, people never change, do they💧？”
Who Was Priest Kisen Hōshi (Birth Year Unknown) ？ … A Buddhist monk of the Shingon school and a poet who lived during the early Heian period. He was one of the Six Poetic Immortals (Rokkasen) mentioned in the preface to the Kokin Wakashū, an imperial anthology of Japanese poetry. Later traditions held that he was born in Otokuni District, Yamashiro Province.
“The world… mumble mumble …is always like that, you know… snore snore ”
He understands the meaning of this poem even while sleeping?! Leon, you’re incredible!!
