４. 田子の浦にうち出でて見れば白妙の富士の高嶺に雪は降りつつ

Leon gazes at Mount Fuji from Tago-no-Ura♪

その「見事さ」に絶賛しています

He is absolutely blown away by its breathtaking beauty

上の句…たごのうらにうちいでてみればしろたえの

The first half…Tago no ura ni uchiidete mireba shirotae no

下の句…ふじのたかねにゆきはふりつつ

The second half…Fuji no takane ni yukiwa furitsutsu

現代訳…田子の浦の浜辺に出て、遠くを見渡すと、真っ白な布をかぶせたような富士山の頂に、雪がしんしんと降り続いているのが見える。

Modern translation…Standing on the beach at Tago-no-Ura and gazing into the distance, you can see snow quietly falling over the peak of Mount Fuji, as if its summit were covered in pure white cloth.

解説…「田子の浦」は現在の静岡県。富士山の南側にある駿河湾沿岸辺りのこと。

Explanation…Tago-no-Ura refers to the coastal area around Suruga Bay in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture, on the southern side of Mount Fuji.

「うち出でてみれば」とは、ただ「田子の浦から見る」のではなく、「視界がパッと開けた場所から富士山を見た！」という臨場感があるイメージ。

The phrase “uchi-idete mireba” gives the vivid impression of stepping into a place where the view suddenly opens up, and seeing Mount Fuji spread out before youー not simply looking at it from Tago-no-Ura.

「白妙」は以前の記事【２. 持統天皇】で取り上げた時と同じく、白い布・白い織物を連想させる言葉。

”Shirotae” is word that evokes white cloth or white woven fabric, just as it did in the previous article, “２. Empress Jitō.”

なので「白妙の富士」は、ただ単に真っ白ではなく、白い布をまとったような富士山という意味。

So, “Shirotae no Fuji” doesn’t simply mean a pure white Mount Fuji; it evokes the image of Mount Fuji draped in white cloth.

「高嶺」とは、文字通りの高い峰。

“Takanē” literally means a high peak.

富士山を単なる美しい山としてではなく、「圧倒的に高くそびえる山」として捉えています。

Rather than seeing Mount Fuji as simply a beautiful mountain, the poet portrays it as a towering, awe-inspiring peak.

当時の人々にとって富士山は、今以上に特別な存在で、多くの歌にも詠まれているんですよね～♪

To people of that time, Mount Fuji was an even more special presence than it is today, and it appears in many poems from that era, too♪

「雪は降りつつ」は、「雪が積もっている」のではなく、「今この瞬間も雪が降っている」という動きのある富士山を想像しています。

“Yuki wa furitsutsu” doesn’t describe snow that has already accumulated; instead, it evokes the image of Mount Fuji with snow still falling at this very moment, giving the scene a sense of movement.

単に「富士山は美しい！」というのではなく、田子の浦→富士山→高嶺→雪…と最終的に視線が富士山の頂上まで到達する…広大な風景が目の前に展開する素晴らしい歌なのです

Rather than simply saying, “Mount Fuji is beautiful！”, this wonderful poem guides you gaze from Tago-no-Ura → Mount Fuji → its towering peak → the falling snow, until your eyes finally reach the very summit.

※山部赤人(生年不詳…おおよそ７～８世紀頃)とは？…奈良時代の歌人。前回の柿本人麻呂と同様、三十六歌仙のひとり。聖武天皇時代の宮廷歌人だったと思われるが、「続日本紀」などの正史に名前がないことから、下級官人であったと推測されている。

Who was Yamabe no Akahito (birth date unknown, probably around the ７th－８th century) ？…He was a poet of the Nara period and, like Kakinomoto no Hitomaro in the previous article, one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

He is thought to have been a court poet during the reign of Emperor Shōmu.

However, since his name does not appear in official historical records such as the “Shoku Nihongi,” it is believed that he was probably a lower-ranking court official.
