Raccoon
Raccoon Junior High’s school Trip♪ 6
The morning of the final day of the school trip.
They woke up at 6a.m. again today.
Since they were already fast asleep a little after 10 p.m. last night, they managed to get plenty of sleep.
Before breakfast, they took their time in their room getting ready for the morning and organizing their luggage.
They carefully checked to make sure they hadn’t forgotten anything!
When it was time, they headed to the dining hall next to the first-floor lobby.
Another breakfast buffet today♪
They took as much of their favorite dishes as they liked.
What did Leon choose…?
“Today I decided to go mainly with Japanese food♪
Natto…to be honest, I’m not really a fan of the smell, but I felt like giving it a try today💧
So, I went ahead and brought some.
It’s good for you and healthy, after all!
…And I was able to eat it just fine♪
Still, I couldn’t pass up the grilled bacon and French fries.”
And what did Ark choose…?
“Curry for breakfast♪
And natto rice, plus the mackerel sushi that was available again today♡
…Somehow, it ended up being mostly carbs💧
But I still finished everything!
I’m totally full again first thing in the morning today~♪”
As the two of them relaxed, sipping their iced coffee after breakfast,
“Good morning! Leon, Ark!”
“Ah! Good morning, Teacher Barry!!”
“Looks like you both got up properly this morning and finished your breakfast, huh?
…Today’s the last day of the school trip.
Just because it’s the final day, don’t go overboard and cause any trouble, got it?”
“We wouldn’t do that~!”
」
“You’ll have free time again today but make sure you’re at the Shinkansen ticket gate at Kyoto Station by 3p.m.!
Don’t forget, okay?! If you’re late, I’ll leave you behind
?”
“Yesss! We definitely won’t be late~!!”
“At times like this, it’s only right to at least buy a little souvenir for the people who’ve been helping you regularly!
…Like a pennant, or a spirit-boosting wooden sword, or a Nishijin-ori wallet…”
(What era is he talking about for souvenirs?
Those things aren’t even sold anymore💧)
“…Hm? Did I say something strange?!”
“N-nothing like that💦
We bought souvenirs properly~!”
“Good, good♪
Then today, like true students at Raccoon Middle School…enjoy the trip with purity, integrity, and gentlemanly manners, got it?”
“Yesss! We’ll have fun~♪”
They immediately returned to their room, packed their luggage, and checked out.
Since the large bags could be left at the front desk, they made sure to pick them up before gathering at Kyoto Station.
On the final day…the first place they headed to was Fushimi Inari Taisha, which they had also visited on the first night![]()
After all, they wanted to get a goshuin stamp, and they had been curious to see it during the daytime too!
Today, instead of walking, they decided to go all the way around by transferring trains along the way.
As usual, they took the subway from Jujo Station to Kyoto Station.
After that, they got off at Fushimi Inari Station on the Keihan Main Line.
Right away, they could see those famous torii gates♪
They arrived at Fushimi Inari Taisha in the morning♪
The atmosphere is completely different from at night♪
For those who want to read about Fushimi Inari Taisha at night, please refer to the article on Sanjūsangen-dō and Fushimi Inari Taisha♪
Unlike the illuminated night, the Niōmon Gate was bathed in the morning sunlight.
The vermilion tori tunnel looked like this too♪
It was already full of tourists even in the morning.
But since it was early, the air was fresh, and they were able to stroll through the tunnel feeling refreshed![]()
They hadn’t noticed it at night…a walking path in the middle of the torii tunnel.
Straight ahead, they could see the direction of the tunnel’s exit after making the full loop.
At the end of the torii tunnel, the Inari deity who had scolded Leon and Ark💧
Does it just seem calmer than it did at night…?
And the goshuin stamp they hadn’t been able to get last time.
Today, they were finally able to receive it properly♪
And now, time to try their luck! Omikuji time♪
These omikuji at Fushimi Inari Taisha are the kind you usually find at shrines: you shake the box while making a wish, tell the number that comes up to the shrine maiden, and receive your fortune.
There were lots of tourists here too, and a line had formed for the omikuji!
Leon and Ark lined up in different line, waiting for their turn.
…Finally, their turn came,
While making their wishes…after shaking it well, they drew a stick with a number on it!
“Number 21!
…Huh? The same number💦?!”
…And such a miracle happened💧
The numbers go from 1 to 50, which seems fewer than at another shrine, but we never expected to draw the same number from different omikuji!!
Does something like this really happen💦
Could this be the will of the gods too…?
The result was the same💧… but it was a great blessing (daikichi)![]()
“The great blessing I finally drew…and it ended up being the same as his
!”
“…Well, I guess things like this are fine once in a while, right?
…It’s actually my third great blessing (daikichi) though♪
“That last comment was totally unnecessary
!”
It was a shame they couldn’t do the two-hour torii tunnel ‘buffet course’💧due to time constraints, but they were glad they got to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha the morning♪
Finally, they wrote their wishes on ema plaques, offered them at the shrine, and left Fushimi Inari Taisha.
To head to their next destination, they first returned to Fushimi Inari Station and went to Demachiyanagi Station.
Erom there, they took a bus…about nine minutes.
They got off at the Ginkaku-ji-dou bus stop.
That’s right, their next destination was Ginkaku-ji.
It’s about a 10-minute walk from the Ginkaku-ji-dou bus stop to Ginkaku-ji.
Along the way, they could enjoy a promenade called the Philosopher’s Path♪
![]()
At the entrance sign, Leon took a photo of Ark ![]()
![]()
Huh? It looked like something sacred just passed by…💧?
Along this promenade…a row of cherry trees continued along the river.
Even now, the autumn leaves are beautiful, but…
In spring, they’d probably be able to enjoy even more beautiful cherry blossoms![]()
Looks like they’ll have to come to Kyoto in the spring too!
I wonder if Leon and Ark thought of anything philosophical.
“We’re not thinking about anything that deep- we’re just enjoying the trip~♪”
Along the way, they took photos, sat on benches by the river, and strolled lazily…Finally, they reached the entrance to Ginkaku-ji!

There, Ark took a photo of Leon with the stone pillar engraved with “Jishō-ji’ ![]()

It was hot again today, so all the buttons on their gakuran were undone!
“Hey~
Button up your gakuran properly‼”
“Waa! S-sorry💦‼”
(So, Teacher Barry was watching…💧)
…Teacher Barry, who’s carefully supervising 💧 or rather…chaperoning the students.
He doesn’t miss a thing.
But in reality, if you leave your gakuran open, the teacher scolds you, right?
…Why do you think that is?
‘Ginkaku-ji’ is the common name; the real name is Jishō-ji…Higashiyama Jishō Zen Temple.
It began when the villa ‘Higashiyama-den,’ built by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the 8th shogun, was converted into a Zen temple after his death, in accordance with his wishes.
↑This image shows the main gate at the entrance.
Here are the pamphlet and the admission ticket.
The ticket on the top right, like at Kinkaku-ji, is actually a small note, which is pretty nice♪
They paid the 500-yen entrance fee.
Passing through the Ginkaku-ji fence and going through the middle gate, they could see a building called Hōshokan.
The garden here was beautiful too![]()
And then, the Kogetsudai!
There are two theories about this sand mound: one is that it was made for moon viewing, and the other is that it reflects moonlight to illuminate the main hall.
…But apparently, its exact purpose is still unknown💧
Why Japanese people⁉」
“Can they really put something so vague in the garden~?
Why Japanese people⁉”
“But this smooth surface…it kinda looks like Japanese sweets💧”
“It does look tasty for sure♪”
“Either way, since it’s apparently related to the moon, it feels kind of poetic♪”
“Oooh~! On the third day at last, Ark, have you come to understand the Japanese sprit~?”
“Since when are you Japanese, anyway
?”
And finally, they came face to face with Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion) !
“It’s not silver~!”
“…Bet you thought I’d say that, huh?”
“I knew it wasn’t silver- the name was just inspired by Kinkaku-ji♪”
“Ashikaga Yoshimasa, fed up with everything, secluded himself here.
Whenever I come here, I feel a little refreshed.
…Kyoto will always be waiting here…JR Central♪”

Following the path from the Kogetsudai, they could enjoy views of the spacious garden![]()
There are lots of tourists here too.
The Tōgudō, a National Treasure.
It’s a square, 6.9 meters on each side, and the interior is said to be divided into four rooms:

During their stay in Kyoto…the days had been hot, but the garden at Ginkaku-ji was already starting to show autumn colors![]()
And here is the ‘Ocha-no-i,’ located on the hill.
It was a spring reserved exclusively for Yoshimasa, and apparently, it’s still drinkable even today.
It’s quite a climb from Ginkaku-ji to get up here.
For Yoshimasa’s attendants, coming here to fetch water every day must have been pretty hard work💧
“This isn’t exactly the kind of place where you can casually shout, ‘Heey, refill💧!'”
“If I were the one sent to fetch it, I might get so tired just carrying the water that I’d sneak a few big gulps of the spring myself💦.”
“You totally would, you would~!”
“Though if they caught me, they might shout, ‘Insolent fool! Kneel right there
!!’ and cut me down💦”
“Shoguns back then…scary💧!”
They say that…but you two would probably start firing something even stronger, like a magnum or a rocket launcher, if things really got serious💧.

They were able to get closer than they expected, so it was nice being able to observe the details up close♪

Leon and Ark also took a commemorative photo with Ginkaku-ji, enjoying the cool breeze filled with negative ions flowing down from the mountains![]()

And this is the gushuin stamp they received♪
Once again, the calligraphy is wonderfully bold and beautiful![]()
For a souvenir, they bought the ‘Silver Bell of Happiness,’ because they liked its sound♪
Instead of a loud rattling noise, it made a gentle, refined koro-koro chime![]()
After that, they left Ginkaku-ji, the autumn leaves seeing them off, as they headed to their next destination.
On the approach road they had passed before visiting Ginkaku-ji, they spotted a shop that caught their interest!
The two of them had promised to stop by after their visit♪
The shop was a café called ‘Hana Usagi’![]()
The school trip had been a lot of fun, but by the third day, the fatigue was definitely starting to build up!
…At times like that, you start craving something sweet, right?
So, they enjoyed a little pre-lunch teatime at this café♪
Just like the shop’s name suggests, the café was decorated with lots of cute rabbit plushies and illustrations.
But for some reason, there were also plenty of autographs and photos of Yokohama BayStars players displayed as well💧
Maybe the owner is a BayStars fan💦?
They seemed busy serving customers, so they didn’t get a chance to ask.
And what Leon ordered was…a set of chilled shiratama zenzai with vanilla ice cream and matcha!
」
“I was mainly craving something sweet, but the matcha in the set was what made me choose this place♪
They use large dainagon azuki beans, and they go perfectly with the vanilla ice cream![]()
The double sweetness really soaks into tired body~♪
And then there’s the nice, bitter matcha!
It’s really easy to drink, and it refreshes your mouth after all that sweetness, making the shiratama zenzai taste even better again♡
This combination is the best
”
Next, what Ark ordered was…a set of anmitsu with matcha ice cream and matcha!
” When you think of a traditional sweets shop, you’ve got to go with anmitsu, right?
Shiratama dumplings, agar jelly, peaches, and azuki beans…and the syrup poured over them brinks it all together in perfect harmony![]()
With the matcha ice cream added too…it’s like a treasure chest of sweets!
It’s so delicious it blows away all the fatigue from the trip!!
Just like Leon said, I was really happy the matcha came as part of the set too~♪”
After quickly finishing their Japanese sweets, the two sipped their matcha while chatting about how wonderful Ginkaku-ji had been.
Coming to Kyoto really means you can’t go wrong with the food♪
And next, they finally headed for their last destination.
They took a bus from the ‘Ginkaku-ji-mae’ bus stop for about 19 minutes.
They got off at the ‘Shiyakusho-mae’ bus stop in downtown Kyoto- the same place they visited yesterday.
The quirky school trip adventure of Leon and Ark, childhood friends, continues…
