Leon pours his heart out to Chris and Kevin, who are quietly going about their work as fishermen. 💧

上の句…わたのはらやそしまかけてこぎでんと

The first half…Wata no hara yasoshima kakete kogidento

下の句…ひとにはつげよあまのつりぶね

The second half…Hito niwa tugeyo ama no turibune

現代訳…広い海原を多くの島々を目指して船出したと、都の人々に伝えて欲しい。

そこにいる漁師の釣り船よ、私の旅立ちを知らせてくれ。

Modern Translation …Please tell the people in the capital that I have set sail across the vast ocean, heading for its many islands.
You fishing boats out there, please carry the news of my departure back to the capital.

解説…「わたの原」とは、大海原のこと。

Explanation … “Wata no hara” refers to the vast open sea.

「八十島かけて」は、「八十」は「たくさん」、「かけて」は「目指して」という意味。

“Yasoshima kakete” means “heading for many islands.” “Yaso” means “many,” while “kakete” means “aiming for” or “making for.”

「漕ぎ出でぬと」の「ぬ」は完了の助動詞で「漕ぎ出したよ」となります。

In “kogi-idenu to,” the “nu” is an auxiliary verb indicating completion, so the phrase means “I have set sail!”

「人には告げよ海人の釣り船」の「人」とは都にいる人々を指します。

The “hito” in “hito ni wa tsugeyo ama no tsuribune” refers to the people living in the capital.

「海人」＝「漁師」で「釣り船」を人間に見立てて呼びかける…擬人法を使っています。

“Ama” means “fisherman,” and the poet addresses the fishing boats as if they were people. This is an example of personification.

実は、この歌は、これから大海原に船を漕ぎ出して冒険に出かけるようなワクワクしたものではなく、作者の参議篁が壱岐国へ流される際に都を離れる心情を詠んだものとされ、旅立ちの不安と都への未練がにじむ歌なのです。

Actually, this poem isn’t about the excitement of setting sail across the vast ocean on an adventure, as one might imagine. It is believed to have been written by the author, Councilor Ono no Takamura, when he was exiled to Iki Province and had to leave the capital behind.

The poem subtly conveys his anxiety about the journey and his lingering attachment to the capital.

※参議篁(802－853)とは？…本名・小野篁(おののたかむら)。平安時代初期の公卿。834年、遣唐副使に任ぜられるが、ある理由で乗船を拒否。その遣唐使の事業を風刺する漢詩を作り、それを知った嵯峨上皇が激怒。官位剥奪され壱岐国に流罪に処された経歴を持つ。

Who was Sangi Takamura (802－853)? ……His real name was Ono no Takamura. He was a court noble in the early Heian period.

In 834, he was appointed Vice-Ambassador to Tang China, but for some reason, he refused to board the ship. He also composed a Chinese poem satirizing the mission, which enraged the retired Emperor Saga. As a result, he was stripped of his court rank and exiled to Iki Province.

「…る、流罪？」

“…E-exiled? ?”
