Leon’s Hyakunin issyu♪ 【６. Ōtomo no Yakamochi】

６. かささぎの渡せる橋に置く霜の白きを見れば夜ぞ更けにける

↑宮中の御階に降りた霜の白さを見て、織姫と彦星のために…かささぎたちが天の川に架けた橋を想像したレオン。

Leon, seeing the white frost covering the palace steps, imagines the bridge that the magpies formed across the Milky Way for Orihime and Hikoboshi.

上の句…かささぎのわたせるはしのおくしもの

The first half…kasasagi no wataseru hashi no oku shimo no

下の句…しろきをみればよぞふけにける

The second half…shiroki wo mireba yo zo fukenikeru

現代訳…かささぎが天の川に架かる橋のような宮中の御階(みはし)に、霜が真っ白に降りているのを見ると、夜もすっかり更けてしまったのだなぁ。

Modern translation…Seeing the frost covering the palace steps as white as snow, like the bridge of magpies spanning the Milky Way, I realize that the night has grown very late.

解説…「かささぎ」は、カラスの仲間に近い鳥で、黒と白の羽を持っています。

Explanation…The magpie is a bird closely related to crows and has distinctive black-and-white feathers.

七夕の伝説では、織姫と彦星が１年に１度会うための橋を作るのが、かささぎたち。

According to the legend of Tanabata, magpies form a bridge so that Orihime and Hikoboshi can meet once a year.

つまり、「かささぎの渡せる橋」とは、七夕の夜、かささぎが天の川に翼を連ねて作った橋とい意味。

In other words, ” the bridge formed by the magpies” refers to the bridge they create by lining up their wings across the Milky Way on the night of Tanabata.

しかし、家持が実際に見ているのは「宮中の階段(御階・みはし)」。

However, what Yakamochi is actually looking at is the palace steps.

「白きを見れば」…は、「白いのを見ると」という意味ですが、ただ単に霜を見ているだけでなく、霜が白くなるほど夜が冷え込み、そして時間もかなり経っている状態を表しています。

“Shiroki wo mireba” means “when I see the whiteness,” but it is not simply describing the sight of the frost.

It suggests that the night has grown cold enough for the frost to turn white, and that quite some time has passed.

最後の句「夜ぞ更けにける」と上手くつながっているんですね。

This connects beautifully with the final phrase, “yo zo fuke ni keru.” meaning ” the night has grown very late.”

「ぞ」は、強意の係助詞。

“Zo” is an emphatic particle.

「夜が更けた」というよりも、「夜もずいぶん更けてしまったのだなぁ…。」という、気づき＋しみじみした感慨がある様子。

Rather than simply saying ” the night has grown late,” it conveys a sense of realization and quite emotion, as if to say, “Oh…the night has grown so very late.”

つまり…この歌は、「霜の白さを見て、夜の深まりに気づいた。…その時、七夕伝説のあのかささぎたちが作った橋のように宮中の階段が見えた」…という、幻想的な光景を表したロマンティックで美しい歌なんですね

In other words, this poem depicts a romantic and beautiful, almost dreamlike scene: “Seeing the whiteness of the frost, I realize how deeply the night has fallen…and at that moment, the palace steps appear before me like the bridge formed by the magpies in the legend of Tanabata”

※大伴家持(718～785)とは？…奈良時代の公卿(くぎょう)・歌人。大納言・大伴旅人の子。官位は従三位・中納言。三十六歌仙のひとり。小倉百人一首では中納言家持と表される。「万葉集」の成立にも深く関わった人物として知られている。

Who was Ōtomo Yakamochi (718－785) ？…A court noble and poet of the Nara period.

He was the son of Ōtomo no Tabito, a prominent court official and poet.

He attained the court rank of Junior Third Rank and served as a Chunagon (Middle Counselor).

He was also one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

In the Ogura Hyakunin Issyu, he is referred to as “Chunagon Yakamochi.”

He is also known as a figure who played an important role in the compilation of the Man’yōshū.

「…か…かささぎの…むにゃむにゃ …わたせるはしに…グ～スカ」

“…t-the magpies…ｍumble mumble …crossing the Milky Way…zzz…”
