Raccoon Junior High’s school Trip♪ ２
清水寺を存分に堪能し、お昼も食べ、お土産も買ったレオンとアークの幼馴染Raccoon中学御一行。
次の目的地のためにバスに乗り、祇園へ♪
After fully enjoying Kiyomizu-Temple, having lunch, and picking up some souvenirs, Leon, Ark, and their fellow Raccoon Junior High classmates boarded a bus for their next destinationー Gion♪
バス停からすぐ…「祇園さん」と親しまれる八坂神社に到着！
Just a short walk from the bus stop, they arrived at Yasaka Shrine, affectionately known as “Gion-san”！
ここも多くの参拝者＆観光客でいっぱい。
This place was also packed with worshippers and tourists.
お参りする鈴は順番待ち。
The bell for prayers even had a line of people waiting their turn.
順番が来たら…レオンたちもちゃんと一礼をしてからお賽銭を入れ、鈴を鳴らし、柏手を２回打って、お願い事をしました。
When their turn finally came, Leon and Ark politely bowed first, placed their offering in the box, rang the bell, clapped their hands twice, and made their prayers.
最後に、深く一礼。
Finally, they finished with deep bow.
さぁ、何をお願いしたのかな～？
So, what did they wish for？

” That’s a secret♪”
ちゃんと御朱印も頂きました
Of course, they also received a goshuin
今回もため息が出るほどの達筆さです。
Once again, the calligraphy was so beautiful it almost took their breath away.
そして、ここで運試し！ おみくじタ～イム♪
And now, time to try their luckー omikuji time♪
まずは、レオンから！
First up is Leon！
「やった～♪ 大吉だ～！
おみくじに書かれている通り…この修学旅行中は、心安らかに過ごしたいと思います♪」
” Yay♪ I got Great Blessing！
Just like it says on the fortune, I’m going to spend this school trip peacefully and enjoy it♪”
続いて、アークが引いたおみくじの結果は…？
Next up, what was the result of the fortune Ark drew…？
「は、半吉～？ 何それ、初めて聞いた‼」
” Hankichi…？ What’s that？ I’ve never heard of it before!!”
※半吉とは？…吉凶半々の状態の運勢で、(神社によって解釈が違いますが)吉・中吉より下で、末吉よりも上のランクと捉えて良いでしょう。
What is Hankichi？…It means a fortune that’s half good and half bad.
(It can vary depending on the shrine.)
Generally speaking, you can think of it as ranking below Kichi and Chūkichi, but above Sue-kichi.
「そうなんだ！ じゃあ、今回はオレの勝ちだな‼」
” I see！ Then I guess I win this time!!”
「おみくじで勝ち負けって…💧」
“Since when is drawing fortunes a competition…？💧”
レオンが「大吉」だったのと、アークは「半吉」という珍しさから、木には結ばず、おみくじは持ち帰ることにしました。
Because Leon got Great Blessing and Ark drew the rare Hankichi, they decided not to tie the fortunes to the tree and instead take them home as keepsakes.
次の目的地は…風神雷神の屏風で有名な、京都最古の禅寺建仁寺。
Their next destination was Kennin-ji, Kyoto’s oldest Zen templeー famous for its folding screen painting of the Wind God and Thunder God.
八坂神社から歩いて約15分くらいの場所にあります。
It’s located about a 15-minute walk from Tasaka Shrine.
その間…舞妓さんで有名なお茶屋街を通りました♪
Along the way, they passed through the teahouse district famous for its maiko♪
まだ明るい時間だったので、店は準備中のところが多いらしく、１人の舞妓さんを遠目で目撃できただけでした💧
Since it was still fairly early in the day, many of the establishments seemed to still be preparing to open, so they were only able to spot a single maiko from a distance💧
「残念！ もっと近くでキレイな舞妓さん、見たかったな～♪」
” What a shame！ I wanted to see a beautiful maiko up close♪”
「確かにな…。
しかし、お前の好みが黒髪の東洋人だとは…子供の頃、知る由もなかったぜ💧」
” Yeah, true…
But I never would’ve guessed when we were kids that your type would be black-haired Asian woman. 💧”
「…そ、それは！ たまたまだよ…たまたま💦‼」
“…Th-that’s not it！ It’s just a coincidence…coincidence💦‼”
「そ～かぁ～？
確か、最初に付き合ったのはブロンドのカーリーヘアの娘(こ)で、その次はブラウンのセミロング。その次が…。」
” Oh really？
If I remember right, the first girl you dated had curly blonde hair, the next had brown semi-long hair…and after that…”
「オレの女性遍歴…ここでバラすなよ
！」
” Hey！ Don’t start revealing my dating history here!!”
入口の門でパチリ
They snapped a quick photo at the entrance gate.
建仁寺の名が刻まれた石柱が立派です！
The stone pillar engraved with the name Kennin-ji was truly impressive！
そして、この建仁寺…風神雷神だけではなく、お庭も素晴らしい
And this temple…it’s not just famous for the Wind and Thunder Godsー the gardens are wonderful as well
このお庭の名前…まんま「まる・さんかく・しかくのにわ」と読みます。
The name of this garden is quite literalー it’s read as ” the Circle, Triangle, and Square Garden.
↑ほら、この空間に「まる・さんかく・しかく」が存在するでしょう？
↑See？ In this space, you can spot the “circle, triangle, and square,” right？
その他の部屋から見えるお庭も、きちんと手入れされて美しい。
The gardens visible from the other rooms were also carefully maintained and beautiful.
計算された美しさ…それが日本庭園…日本の美
A beauty born of careful design－ that is the essence of Japanese gardens…the beauty of Japan.
「忙(せわ)しい世の中とは違い…ここの空間は、時の流れがゆっくりで優雅に感じるね。…なんだか落ち着くよ♪」
” Unlike the busy world outside, time here feels like it flows slowly and gracefully…It’s somehow really calming♪”
「おぉ～、レオンも日本人の心が分かるのですね～♪」
” Ohhh！ Looks like you understand the Japanese sprit too, Leon♪”
「そう言ってるお前もオレも、アメリカ人だろ💧」
” You do realize both you and I are Americans, right💧？”
そして、↑これがパンフレットと入場チケット。
And here are the pamphlet and admission ticket.
入館料600円を納めました。
The entrance fee was 600 yen.
「WABI.SABI～♪」
「Oh, you understand the Japanese mind, right？」
「You and I are both American, right？」
「…さっきと同じ件(くだり)を英語で言っただけ～♪」
” I just said the same thing as beforeー only in English♪”
そして、なんと…枯山水のお庭もあります
And amazingly…there’s also a karesansui (dry landscape) garden
「〈枯山水〉って、実際の水を使わず、白砂や石で水の流れや滝などを表現する庭造りのことをいうんだよね？」
” Karesansui refers to a style of garden that represents flowing water or waterfalls using white sand and stones, without actually using real water, right？”
「…確かに！ 大きな岩の近くには、こんな渦状の波が立つもんな。
日本人の観察眼って繊細で芸術的なんだな‼」
” That’s true！ Near the large rocks, you can see these swirling wave patterns.
The Japanese eye for observation is really delicateー and artistic！”
そして、ついに！ あの風神・雷神とご対面‼
And finally！ They came face to face with the famous Wind God and Thunder God!!
＆「Waaah♪」
さすがの２人も絵の迫力に負けて、ため息が漏れちゃいました♪
Even the two of them were overwhelmed by the power of the painting, letting out a soft sign of awe♪
「思っていたよりも屏風自体は小さく感じたけど、風神・雷神の威厳と力強さがよく表現されているよね♪」
” The folding screen itself feels smaller than I expected, but the dignity and power of the Wind God and Thunder God are really well expressed♪”
「本物ではなく、デジタル複製されたものとはいえ…存在感ハンパない！」
” Even though this is a digital reproduction and not the original, its presence is incredible！”
↑遠目から「風神・雷神」が飾ってあるお堂を撮影。
They took a photo of the hall where the Wind God and Thunder God are displayed from a distance
そして、まだまだ建仁寺には見逃してはいけないものが…！
And there’s still something at Kennin-ji that you absolutely must not miss…！
それは…‼
And that is…‼
バーン！
Ta-da！🎉
法堂の天井に描かれた双龍！
The Twin Dragons painted on the ceiling of the Dharma Hall！
大迫力のこの双龍。
These twin dragons are incredibly powerful in their presence.
建仁寺…創建800年を記念して描かれた天井画なのです。
This ceiling painting was created to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Kennin-ji’s founding.
もちろん御朱印も戴きました♪
Of course, they also received a goshuin here as well.
ここで、また運試し！ おみくじタ～イム♪
And here, it was time to try their luck again－ omikuji time♪
建仁寺でしか引けない…風神・雷神メダル付きおみくじをチョイス‼
This time, they chose a special omikuji that can only be drawn at Kennin-ji…one that comes with a Wind God and Thunder God medal‼
さぁ、まずはレオンから！ 何が出るかな～？
Alright, Leon goes first！ What will he get, I wonder～？
「やった～♪ また大吉だぁ～
しかも風神メダルもGET～♫」
” Yes♪ I got Great Blessing again
And I even got the Wind god medal too～♫”
「レオン…ツイてるな～💦」
” Leon…you’re really on a lucky streak💦”
「また〈東に幸あり〉だって…。だったら、西にある佐賀県には帰りたくないな～💧」
” It says ‘Good fortune lies to the East‘ again…If that’s the case, I kind of don’t want to go back to Saga Prefecture out in the West💧”
「それには、Raccoon高校に甲子園で優勝してもらって、他県に学校を移設してもらうしかないよな💧」(【栄冠ナイン】の記事参照)
” Then the only way is for Raccoon High to win the national championship at Koshien and have the school relocated to another prefecture💧”

” Coach Albert…we’re counting on you～”
「…今年優勝しても、次は福岡県に移設だから、結局〈西〉になっちゃうんだけどね…💧」
” …Even if they win this year, the school’s being relocated to Fukuoka next－ so it’s still west anyway💧”
「な～！ そっか～、意味ないじゃ～ん💦‼」
” Whaー💦 Oh, right…then that makes it pointless💦‼”
そして、次はアークが引いたおみくじの結果は…？
And next, what was the result of the fortune Ark drew…？
「オレは…小吉か…。
…だけど、レオンとはカブらず、雷神のメダルが入ってた～♪」
” Mine is …Small Blessing, huh.
…But hey, at least it’s different from yoursー I got the thunder God medal～♪”
「フッ
今回もまたオレの勝ちだな！」
” Heh Looks like I win again this time！”
「…だから、おみくじに勝ち負けなんてないって‼
そんなことより…〈旅行運〉→華やいだ場所が吉…だって！」
” I told you－ there’s no such thing as winning or losing with omikuji！
More importantly, look at this－ under Travel Luck it says: ‘Lively glamorous places bring good fortune.”
「おぉ、京都の街のイメージにピッタリじゃん♪
アークも何か良いことがありそうで良かったな！ …小吉だけど‼」
” Oh, that fits the image of Kyoto perfectly♪
Glad to hear something good might happen for you too－ even if it’s just Small Blessing‼”
「最後の一言はいらん！」
“You didn’t need that last comment！”
建仁寺を後にした２人は、また徒歩で六波羅蜜寺へ。
After leaving Kennin-ji, the two of them headed to Rokuharamitu-ji on foot.
六波羅…と聞くと、毎週欠かさず観ていた…大河ドラマ「鎌倉殿の13人」を思い出します。
Hearing the name Rokuhara immediately brings to mind the historical drama The 13 Lords of the Shogun, which I watched every week without fail.
六波羅探題があった場所、絶対訪れたかった！
This was the place where the Rokuhara Tandai once stoodー I definitely wanted to visit it！
なのに、御朱印の画像だけ💦
And yet…the only photos I have are of the goshuin💦
ちゃんと、お参りもして…おみくじも引いたのですが、スミマセン。
We did properly pay our respects and even drew omikuji, but sorry about that.
↑御朱印２枚とも六波羅蜜寺のものです。
↑Both of these goshuin are from Rokuharamitsu-ji.
「寺内にある牛像をなでなでしてたら、撮影忘れちゃった💧」
” While I was busy patting the cow statue inside the temple, I totally forget to take any photos💧”
「身体の不調なところを撫でることで、悪いものを取り去ってくれるという牛像。忘れっぽい脳のために頭をうんと撫でてくれば良かったのに～💧！」
” That cow statue is supposed to remove ailments if you rub the part that corresponds to where your body hurts.
you should’ve rubbed its head a lot－ for that forgetful brain of yours💧”
「確かに～！…って、それはオレに言ってんのか？」
” Yeah, you’re right－！…Hey, wait a second, were you taking about me just now？”
駆け足で３寺を拝観した２人♪
After briskly visiting three temples, the two of them had quite the experience♪
いろんな観点や感受性が養われたようです。
It seems their perspectives and sensitivities were enriched in many ways.
そして、次は本日のメインと言い切ってもよい場所へと向かいます。
Next, they head to a place that could easily be called the main highlight of the day.
まだまだ続く…レオンとアーク…幼馴染の修学旅行珍道中。
