Leon’s Memories of Summer Vacation－ Part １

「そろそろ…きちんと部屋を片付けなきゃな💦」

“I really need to get this place properly cleaned up soon…💦”

レオン・S・ケネディがラクーンシティに配属されて…約１ヶ月。

It’s been about a month since Leon S. Kennedy was assigned to the Raccoon Police Department.

毎日の多忙な職務に追われ、自宅アパートは引っ越した時のまま。

Caught up in the demands of his busy day-to-day duties, his apartment is still pretty much exactly as it was when he first moved in.

日用品以外は…未だに積み重なった段ボールの中です💧

Aside from the everyday essentials, almost everything is still packed away in the piles of cardboard boxes💧

…今日はレオンの久しぶりのお休み。

…Today is Leon’s first day off in a while.

いつもより遅く起きた朝は、朝とも昼ともつかない食事を済ませ、その後は部屋を整理整頓することに決めました。

After waking up later than usual, he had a meal that was somewhere between breakfast and lunch, then decided to spend the rest of the day tidying up his apartment.

「ふぅ始めるとするか…。」

“Whew. Guess I’d better get started…”

あれこれ段ボールを開けながら…クローゼットには服を、本や雑誌は本棚…と、次々とその中身を空にしていく…。

Opening one cardboard box after another, he puts his clothes away in the closet, his books and magazines on the bookshelf, and steadily clears out the boxes one by one…

なかなか手際が良い♪

He’s actually pretty efficient once he gets going♪

「…始めたら、早いんだけど… 始めるまでの重い腰が上がらんのさ💦」

“…Once I start, I’m pretty quick about it…It’s just getting myself to start that’s the hard part💦”

機械仕掛けのようにサクサクと作業を進め、とうとう最後の段ボールを片付けるだけになりました。

Working away like a well-oiled machine, Leon steadily gets everything sorted until there’s only one last cardboard box left to put away.

「…早くこれを終わらせて、買い物でも行こう♪」

“…Let’s get this finished up so I can go do some shopping♪”

その段ボールを開け、中の物を取り出すレオン。

Leon opens the box and begins taking out the things inside.

すると、分厚い参考書の中から、何かがバサッと落ちる…。

Suddenly, something slips out from between the pages of a thick reference book and flutters to the floor…

持っていた参考書を床に置き、それを拾い上げるレオン。

Leon sets the book down and picks it up.

「…〈夏休みの宿題〉💦？ …参考書に挟んだまま忘れてた？」

“…〈Summer Vacation Homework〉💦？…I forgot I’d left this tucked inside the book？”

パラパラとめくってみる…。

He flips through the pages.

「懐かしいな～！」

“Wow…this brings back memories！”

思わず口から感情を漏らし、夢中で読み進めるレオン。

Unable to hide his nostalgia, Leon eagerly reads on, completely absorbed in his old homework.

マリーゴールドってどんな花？

What kind of flower is a marigold？

• キク科の一年草で、春〜秋まで長く咲き続ける

An annual flowering plant in the daisy family.

It blooms for a long period, from spring through fall.

• 花色は 黄色・オレンジ・赤褐色・複色など多彩

It comes in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, reddish-brown, and bicolor.

• 草丈は 20〜100cm と品種により幅広い

Depending on the variety, it can grow anywhere from 20 to 100 cm (８ to 40 inches) tall.

• 特有の香りがあり、家庭菜園の害虫よけ（コンパニオンプランツ）にも使われる。

Marigolds have a distinctive scent and are also used in home gardens as companion plants to help keep pests away.

「なかなかよく調べているな♪」

“Not bad！ I did my homework pretty thoroughly♪”

と、10歳の自分自身に感心するレオン💧

And Leon finds himself impressed by his own ten-year-old self💧

４月６日 (

) 【準備！】

April ６ (

) ー【Preparation！】

よく芽が出るように、種を一晩…水に浸けておきます。

To help the seeds sprout, I soak them in water overnight.

「おぉ！これは覚えてるぞ‼ じぃちゃんからもらった種だ♪ …なぜか袋に大きく日本語表記されている💧 (理由は不明💧)

…そう、実はこの時…父親を亡くしたオレを引き取ってくれたじぃちゃんが、落ち込んでいるオレにくれたものなんだよな…。

…育て始めたのは４月だったけど…開花する頃には夏だし、それをそのまま夏休みの宿題にしちゃおうと、この時考えたんだった…。ちゃっかり少年だったな～オレ💦」

“Oh！ I remember this！ These were the seeds Grandpa gave me♪

…I have no idea why the label on the packet is written in Japanese💧

…Yeah. Grandpa was the one who took me in after I lost my dad.

I was pretty down at the time, and he gave these to me to cheer me up…

…I started growing them in April, but by the time they bloomed, it would be summer.

So I figured I could just use the whole thing as my summer vacation homework.

Man, I was a pretty clever little kid💦”

４月７日() 【種まき】

April ７ () ー【Planting the Seeds】

種をまく。

Planting the seeds.

カップに土を入れ、そっと種を置いて軽く覆土（ふくど、土をかぶせる）する。

Fill a cup with soil, gently place the seeds in it, and lightly cover them with a thin layer of soil.

芽が出る日を楽しみに待つ♪

Now I wait patiently for the sprouts to appear♪

「ゼリーか何かのカップを再利用♪ 夏休みの宿題らしい発想！」

“Reusing an empty jelly cup or something like that♪

Now that’s the kind of idea you’d expect from a summer vacation homework project！”

４月14日() 【芽が出た♪】

April 14 () ー【The Sprouts Have Appeared♪】

赤みのある細い茎が土の表面から顔を出す。発芽を確認♪

A thin, reddish stem pokes its head above the surface of the soil.

The seeds have sprouted♪

「ここまで地味な作業だが…やっぱり芽が出ると嬉しいかった記憶」

“It was pretty uneventful up to this point, but I remember how happy I was when the first sprouts appeared”

４月19日() 【双葉が開く！】

April 19 () ー【The First Leaves Unfurl！】

数日前より茎がしっかりしてきて…双葉（最初に出てくる葉）がきれいに開く♪

The stem is sturdier than it was a few days ago, and the cotyledons (the first leaves to appear) have opened up nicely♪

「ここまで来ると少し安心感♪？毎日欠かさず、水やりと観察、撮影してたもんな！」

(↑床の日本語は💧 …まぁ、気にすんな💦)

“At this point, I started to feel a little more confident it was going to be okay♪

I never missed a day of watering, checking on it, and taking pictures！”

(↑The Japanese writing on the floor is there too, but…💧 Well, just ignore it💦)

５月２日() 【本葉が出る！】

May ２ () ー【The First True Leaves Appear！】

双葉の間からギザギザした本葉（双葉の後に出てくる植物本来の形をした葉）がのぞく。

A jagged-edged true leaf (the plant’s first leaves to emerge after the cotyledons) peeks out from between the cotyledons.

苗らしさが出てきて見た目もぐっとしっかりしてきた。

The seeding is starting to look more like a proper plant, and it’s becoming noticeably sturdier.

土の渇き具合にも気配りする。

I also make sure to keep an eye on how dry the soil is.

「種まきから、約１ヶ月。結構飽きずに頑張ったな💦」

“It’s been about a month since I planted the seeds.

I actually stuck with it pretty well without getting bored💦”

５月18日() 【葉が増えて、株が安定♪】

May 18 () ー【More leaves, and the Plant Is Looking Stronger♪】

本葉が増えて、カップの中が緑で賑やかになってきた。

The true leaves have multiplied, making the cup look lively and green.

茎も太くなり株が安定してきた。

The stem has thickened, and the plant has become more firmly established.

強風が吹いても倒れないほど力強い。

It’s strong enough to stay upright even when strong winds blow.

「ここまで来ると、あとは開花を待つのみ？

…毎日の水やりと観察、画像撮影…よくサボらなかったな💦」 (根は真面目なレオン♪)

“At this point, all that’s left is to wait for it to bloom, I guess？

…I kept up with the daily watering, checking on it, and taking pictures…I’m actually impressed I never slacked off💦” (The serious side of Leon comes out♪)

６月１日() 【つぼみを発見！】

June １ () ー【I Found a Bud！】

１番成長が早い株に黄色い小さなつぼみが付いた。

A small yellow bud has appeared on the fastest growing plant！

他の株も負けじと葉を増やし、全部の株がとても元気！

The other plants are keeping up, putting out more leaves, and all of them are growing strong and healthy！

「ここまで育て上げると、花とはいえ…愛おしくなるよなあともう少しで開花♪？」

“When you’ve watched something grow this much, you can’t help but get attached to it, even if it’s just a flower

It shouldn’t be much longer before it blooms, right♪？”

６月７日() 【初開花】

June ７ () ー【The First Bloom】

花先が開き始める。

The flower petals are beginning to open.

他の株のつぼみも順調に大きく膨らんできている♪

The buds on the other plants are also growing steadily, getting bigger and fuller♪

「種まきから約２ヶ月！

とうとう飽きずにここまでやり遂げた♪ えらいぞ、小学生のオレ」

“It’s been about two months since I planted the seeds！

I actually stuck with it all the way to this point without getting bored♪

Good job, elementary school me“

６月14日() 【複数の株で開花！】

June 14 () ー【Multiple Plants Are in Bloom！】

きれいに黄色い花びらが開き、これぞマリーゴールド

The beautiful yellow petals have opened up, and now it truly looks like a marigold

他の株も次々と開花。黄色の花が一気に増えて華やかになる。

The other plants are blooming one after another.

The number of bright yellow flowers is quickly increasing, making everything look so much more cheerful.

これからしばらく楽しめそうだ♪

It looks like I’ll be able to enjoy these flowers for quite a while♪

「…黄色くて可愛い花

何かを愛情を持って育て上げる。

…父親を亡くし、親戚中にたらい回しにされて…心が荒みそうだったオレにこういう〈尊いこと〉を、じぃちゃんは教えてくれたんだな…。
