前回の記事…クレア・レッドフィールドの大学の友人間で起こった殺人事件。

Last time, we covered the murder case that took place among Claire Redfield’s college friends.

被害者…マンションのオーナー、クライヴ・ヴァンス。

The victim was the apartment building’s owner, Clive Vance.

犯人…このマンションの２階に住む被害者の友人、ジャック・モーガン。

The killer was Jack Morgan, the victim’s friend who lived on the second floor of the building.

今回はその解決編です。

This time, we present the solution.

１.

「オレにはすべて見えてるぜ！」

“I can see everything now！”

アーク・トンプソンは動揺しているジャック・モーガンにゆっくりと向き直った。

Ark Thompson slowly turned toward the visibly shaken Jack Morgan.

ほんの数秒、お互いの心を探るように２人は目を合わす。

For a few brief seconds, the two locked eyes, as if probing each other’s thoughts.

…が、すぐにアークは目線を外し、この部屋にいるレオン・クレア・その他大勢の刑事と捜査員に説明するように話し出した。

…But Ark soon looked away and began speaking to explain everything to Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and the many detectives and investigators gathered in the room.

「この部屋に来て、オレの推理が正しいことを確信した。」

“Coming into this room confirmed that my deduction was correct.”

部屋に散らばる筋トレグッズや散乱したタンスの引き出しなどを避けながら、腹筋台の取っ手の部分に手をつくアーク。

Avoiding the workout equipment scattered around the room and the contents of overturned dresser drawers, Ark placed a hand on the handle of an ab bench.

「まぁ…まずは、実験してみよう！」

“Well then…let’s start with a little experiment！”

そう言うと、近くに転がっていたバスケットボールを拾い、

Saying that, he picked up a basketball that had been lying nearby,

「こいつを被害者と見立ててね。」

“Let’s use this as the victim.”

と、ひょいひょいと片手で弾ませた。

And with that, Ark casually bounced it up and down with one hand.

「バスケットボールを被害者に？」

“A basketball is supposed to be the victim？”

アークの親友レオン・S・ケネディは頭の中を？でいっぱいにさせて聞いてきた。

Leon S. Kennedy, Ark’s best friend, asked in complete confusion, his mind full of question marks.

「ははっ♪ まぁ、とにかく、みんなは３階のエレベーター前に向かってくれ！

…レオンは、このバスケットボールを持って行ってくれ。」

“Haha♪ Anyway, for now, everyone heads to the elevator on the third floor.

…Leon, take this basketball with you.”

今からバスケでもするかのように、軽くパスされたボールをキレイにキャッチして受け取るレオン。

The ball was lightly tossed to him as if they were about to play basketball, and Leon smoothly caught it with ease.

その部屋にいたアークとジャック以外のみんなはレオンと同じ？顔(はてな顔)で、素直にエレベーター前へ向かう。

Everyone in the room except for Ark and Jack headed toward the elevator with the same confused expression Leon had worn.

もちろん、ジャックは容疑者として捜査員に囲まれながら移動した。

Of course, Jack was escorted by investigators as a suspect while they moved.

「どういうことかしらね？」

“What do you think this is all about？”

クレア・レッドフィールドも首をかしげながらレオンに尋ねた。

Claire Redfield asked Leon with a puzzled tilt of her head.

「さぁな…。」

“Beats me…”

レオンもいろいろ考えているのか、それ以上何も言わない。

It seemed Leon was deep in thought himself, because he said nothing more.

ただ、胸に抱えているバスケットボールをじっと見ている。

He simply stared silently at the basketball tucked under his arm.

エレベーター前でそれぞれが思い思いに雑談していると、すぐにアークが腹筋台を片手に現れた。

As everyone chatted among themselves in front of the elevator, Ark soon appeared carrying the ab bench in one hand.

「まずは、この腹筋台を扉が閉まった状態のエレベーターにピッタリくっつける。」

“First, we place this ab bench snugly against the elevator doors while they’re closed.”

アークがそう言いながら、腹筋台の斜面の下の方をエレベーターのドアにピッタリつけて置いた。

As he said this, Ark positioned the lower end of the bench’s slanted surface flush against the elevator doors.

「レオン、さっきのバスケットボールをエレベーターのドアに寄りかかるように腹筋台の上に置いてくれ。」

“Leon, place that basketball from earlier on the ab bench so it rests against the elevator doors.”

と、アークはレオンに指示した。

Ark gave the instruction to Leon.

「あぁ。」

“Got it.”

レオンはアークに言われた通りに、エレベーターのドアに接するようにバスケットボールを腹筋台に置いた。

Leon did as Ark instructed and placed the basketball on the ab bench so that it rested against the elevator doors.

「よし。じゃあ、レオンはここに残って、しばらくバスケットボールの様子を観察していてくれ。」

“Good. Now, Leon, stay here and keep an eye on the basketball for a while.”

「分かった。…何もせずに見ているだけで良いんだな？」

“Understood. …So, all I have to do is watch it without touching anything？”

「…あぁ！他のみんなは階段で２階へ向かおう。」

“Yeah！ Everyone else, let’s head down to the second floor using the stairs.”

レオンをその場に残し、他全員が階段で、２階のエレベーター前に向かった。

Leaving Leon behind, everyone else made their way down the stairs to the elevator on the second floor.

２.

２階のエレベーター前に着いた一同。

The group arrived in front of the elevator on the second floor.

アークの次の動向に注目する。

All eyes were Ark, waiting to see what he would do next.

「事件当時をそのまま再現したいから、他のみんなはここで様子を見ていてくれ。」

“I want to recreate the scene exactly as it happened during the incident, so everyone else stay here and watch.”

アークは当事者のクレアとジャック、確認のため…その場にいた１人の刑事と階段で１階へ向かい、エレベーターに乗り込んだ。

Ark, along with the two people directly involved－ Claire and Jack－ plus one detective there for verification, headed down to the first floor via the stairs and got into the elevator.

そして、そのままエレベーターで２階に昇り、エレベーター前にいる捜査員たちに見守られながら、

Then they rode the elevator back up to the second floor, where the investigators watched closely from outside the elevator doors.

「クレア。これが今、キミとジャックが１階からエレベーターに乗って、２階に着いた時と同じ状態だ。…分かるな？」

“Claire, this is exactly the same situation as when you and Jack rode the elevator up from the first floor and arrived on the second…You understand, right？”

「えぇ。」

“Yes.”

クレアは、記憶を辿りながら、ゆっくり返事した。

Claire answered slowly as she retraced the events in her memory.

「その後、ジャックはキミに何をした？」

“And after that, what did Jack do to you？”

「そうね。…普通に私に先に降りるように促したわ。」

“Let me see…He simply gestured for me to get out first.”

「そう！クレアが降りた隙にジャックは操作盤の３階ボタンを押す。

そして、何食わぬ顔でエレベーターを出る。

…その後、エレベーターはそうなったと思う？」

“Exactly！ The moment Claire stepped out, Jack pressed the button for the third floor on the control panel.

Then he casually exited the elevator as if nothing had happened.

…And what do you think happened to the elevator after that？”

「…３階へ上がるわ。」

“…It went up to the third floor.”

「…ということは、つまり!?」

“…Which means…?!”

一緒にエレベーターに乗っていた刑事が何かに気付いたようだ。

The detective riding in the elevator with them seemed to realize something.

３.

レオンは、腹筋台に置いてあるバスケットボールをじっと睨み続けていた。

Leon continued staring intently at the basketball resting on the ab bench.

アークたちがいなくなって約５分…エレベーターがチーン！と鳴って、どうやらレオンがいる３階に着いたようだ。

About five minutes after Ark and the others had left, the elevator let out a ding！ー apparently, it had arrived on the third floor where Leon was waiting.

すると、エレベーターのドアが開き、ドアに寄りかかっていたバスケットボールが腹筋台の傾斜も加わって、エレベーターの中に吸い込まれるように転がっていった。

As the elevator doors opened, the basketball that had been resting against them rolled forward as if being sucked into the elevator, helped along by the incline of the ab bench.

そして、しばらくしたらドアが閉まる。

Then, after a short while, the doors closed again.

「そうか！そういうことか‼」

“I see！ So that’s how it worked!!”

３階で起こった一部始終を目撃したレオンは、アークに早く報告したくて慌てて階段へ駆け出した。

Having witnessed everything that happened on the third floor, Leon hurried toward the stairs, eager to report back to Ark as quickly as possible.

「どうやら、エレベーターは３階へ上がったようだな。」

“How about it seems the elevator went up to the third floor.”

アークが階数表示板を見上げる。

Ark looks up at the floor indicator panel.

それを確認すると、アークと他の３人は203号室に向かう。

After confirming it, Ark and the other three head toward Room 203.

「そして、キミはジャックと共にジャックの部屋…つまり203号室の前へ行き、玄関前で待たされた。…その時間は約１分足らず。」

“And then, together with Jack, you went to his room…in other words, Room 203, and were made to wait outside the door. …for less than a minute.”

「えぇ。本当にすぐにジャックは部屋から出てきたわ。」

“Yes, Jack really came back out of the room almost immediately.”

クレアは思い出しながら答えた。

Claire answered as she recalled the events.

しばらく、203号室前で時間を潰す４人。

The four of them kill time for a while in front of Room 203．

「…50秒経った。

じゃあ、その時のように、すぐにエレベーターへ行こう！」

“…Fifty seconds have passed.

Now then, just like before, let’s head to the elevator right away！”

アークはエレベーター前まで行くと、▼(下へ)のボタンを押した。

Ark walked over to the elevator and presses the down button.

すると、３階に止まっていたエレベーターは２階まで降りて来て、すぐにドアが開いた。

The elevator, which had been stopped on the third floor, descended to the second floor, and the doors immediately opened.

中にはバスケットボールが、ずっとそこにいたかのように転がってる！

Inside, a basketball was rolling around as if it had been there the whole time！

「‼」

一同が息を呑む。

Everyone gasped.

「アーク！」

“Ark！”

そこに、３階にいたはずのレオンが２階で合流。

At that moment, Leonー who was supposed to have been on the third floor－ joined them on the second floor.

２階に止まっているエレベーターの中のバスケットボールを確認すると、事の全てを悟ったようにアークに頷いて見せた。

After checking the basketball inside the elevator stopped on the second floor, Leon nodded at Ark as though he had realized the whole trick behind the case.

「これがこの事件のトリックさ！そうだろう？ジャック⁉」

“So, this was the trick behind the incident！ Isn’t that right, Jack?!”

アークは挑むような目で、再びジャックに向き直った。

Ark turned back toward Jack once again; his eyes filled with defiance.

「…チッ！」

“…Tch！”

ジャックは、小さく舌打ちだけしてダンマリを決め込んだが、それは完全に犯行を認めたような態度そのものだった。

Jack merely clicked his tongue softly and stubbornly remined silent, but his attitude practically amounted to a full confession.

アークが続ける。

Ark continued.

「遺体をあのように縄でぐるぐる巻きにして丸めたのも、このためだったんだ！

腹筋台から転がりやすくするため。

エレベーターの中の方まで完全に転がさないと、遺体の一部がドアに挟まり、ドアの開閉でエレベーターが３階から動かなくなってしまう。

だから、腹筋台の傾斜を使ったんだ！」

“The reason the body was tied up so tightly with rope and rolled into that shape was for this！

To make it easier to roll off the sit-up bench.

If the body hadn’t rolled completely into the elevator, part of it could have gotten caught in the doors, causing the elevator to stop functioning on the third floor.

That’s why he used the incline of the sit- up bench！”

ジャックは目を背け、頑なに何も言わない。

Jack looked away and stubbornly refused to say a word.

「確かに。

降りた後に、エレベーターの中で何階のボタンを押されようが、エレベーターが何階に行こうが、降りてしまえば確認なんかしないものね…。

あんな短い時間に…何もなかったはずのエレベーターの中に…友だちの死体が！

…その人間心理を私はジャックに利用されてしまったんだわ。」

I see…

After getting off the elevator, no matter which floor button someone presses inside or where the elevator goes afterward, people normally don’t bother checking once they’re stepped out…

And in such a short amount of time…inside an elevator that should have been completely empty…there was my friend’s corpse！

…Jack took advantage of that aspect of human psychology.”

クレアは、哀し気にジャックを見つめた。

Claire gazed sadly at Jack.

５.

改めてここから、犯人・ジャックの行動のおさらい＆細かいヒントの回収！

From here, let’s go over the culprit Jack’s actions once again, along with all the smaller clues that were hidden throughout the case！

時系列でまとめてみました。

I’ve put everything together in chronological order.

(「事件編」の記事と見比べながら確認すると分かりやすいです。)

(It may be easier to follow if you compare it with the ‘Case Part’ article as you read.)

・午前中は大学へ。(そこで周りの友人からクレアが今夜ラクーンシティにいることを小耳に挟む。)

Spent the morning at the university.

(While there, he happened to overhear from friends around him that Claire would be in Raccoon City that night.)

・午後５時過ぎ頃、ジャックはクライヴ宅に到着。 (家賃滞納の件でクライヴから呼び出された。)

Shortly after 5:00 p.m., Jack arrived at Clive’s apartment.

(Clive had called him over regarding his overdue rent.)

・午後５時半頃、クライヴを殺害。

Around 5:30 p.m., Jack murdered Clive.

・すぐに、このトリックを思いつく。

Right afterward, he came up with this trick.

・物取りの犯行に見せるため、金品を奪い(ジャック自身も金に困っていたのもある)、部屋を荒らす。

To make the crime look like a robbery, he stole valuables (partly because Jack himself was also desperate for money) and ransacked the room.

・一旦、自室に戻り、片っ端から…自身のアリバイを立証してもらうための相手を電話やメールで誘う。

After that, he returned to his own apartment and started calling and messaging people one after another in order to secure witnesses for his alibi.

つまり、食事デートをしてくれる相手に連絡を取りまくる。

In other words, he kept contacting people who might agree to have dinner with him.

(いつも断っているはずのクレアがたまたま今回、食事の誘いに応じたのは…これはクレアの天性の正義感から。

名探偵と同じく…野性の勘というか…こういう事件に巻き込まれやすい星の下なのです。)

(The reason Claire－ who would normally turn him down－ happened to accept his dinner invitation this time was because of her natural sense of justice.

Just like a great detective…you could say she has a wild instinct for these things, or perhaps she was simply born under a star that draws her into incidents like this.)

・クレアと８時に会う約束をした。

He arranged to meet Claire at 8:00 p.m.

・クレアに会う直前に３階で腹筋台トリック設置。

Just before meeting her, he carried out the sit-up bench trick on the third floor.

・８時５分。５分遅れで来たクレア

8:05 p.m.ー Claire arrived five minutes late.

待ち合わせ場所を自宅マンション前にしたのは、クレアに被害者を目撃させて、自身のアリバイを完成させるため。

He chose the front of his apartment building as the meeting spot in order to have Claire witness the victim, thereby completing his alibi.

・「携帯電話を忘れた」と嘘をつく

He lied and said, ‘I forget my cellphone.’

もちろん、クレアに被害者を目撃してもらうため。

Of course, this was also to make sure Claire would see the victim.

待ち合わせしているのに手元に携帯電話がないなんて、しかも待ち合わせ場所が自宅前なら一旦、取りに帰れるはず。

After all, if you’re meeting someone and don’t have your phone with you－ especially when the meeting place is right outside your own apartment ー you should be able to simply go back and get it.

…ということは、あからさまな嘘だったということになります。

…Which means it was an obviously transparent lie.

・くさいセリフで嘘をつく💧

He lied with a cheesy line💧

「こんなマンション前でレディーを１人で待たすなんて…」と言って、どうしてもマンション内に連れ込みたかったジャック。

Saying, ‘I can’t leave a lady waiting alone in front of an apartment building like this…,’ Jack was determined to get Claire inside the building no matter what.

全部が嘘ではないけど、くさいセリフの割には強引でしたね。

Not all of it was a lie, but for such a smooth-sounding line, he was pretty forceful about it.

・管理人室を横切る２人

The two of them passed by the manager’s office.

年老いた管理人さん…テレビに夢中でも、クレア＆ジャックと他の訪問者の有無をちゃっかり確認していました。

The elderly building manager…though absorbed in watching TV, still made sure to notice Claire and Jack, as well as whether there were any other visitors.

見知らぬ女性をマンションに連れ込んでいる…こういう下世話な出来事は、人間…見てないようで、結構見ているもの。

When a man brings an unfamiliar woman into the apartment building…people may act like they actually notice these kinds of juicy little situations surprisingly well.

・エレベーターに乗り、ジャックの部屋がある２階へ

They got into the elevator and headed to the second floor, where Jack’s room was located.

２階に着いたら、紳士的にクレアを先に降ろし、自身も降りつつ…中の操作盤の３階を押す。

Once they arrived on the second floor, Jack politely let Claire step out first, then as he stepped out himself, he pressed the button for the third floor on the control panel inside the elevator.

そして、普通にエレベーター外へ。

After that, he casually exited the elevator as well.

・203号室(自室)の前でクレアを待たす。

He made Claire wait in front of Room 203.

１分足らずで出てくるジャック。

Jack came back out in less than a minute.

・すぐにエレベーターへ

Then they immediately headed to the elevator.

▼(下へ)のボタンを押すと、３階にあったエレベーターが降りて来て、すぐドアが開き…２人で遺体発見。

When he pressed the down button, the elevatorー which had gone up to the third floor－ came back down, the doors opened right away, and the two of them discovered the body.

・階段へ

To the staircase.

「犯人がまだ近くで隠れているかも？」とクレアを階段へ誘導。

Saying, ‘The killer might still be hiding nearby,’ he guided Claire toward the stairs.

クレアを１階に行かせ、自身は３階へ行き、エレベーター前に置いてある腹筋台を元の場所へ戻す。

He sent Claire down to the first floor, while he himself went up to the third floor and returned the sit-up bench that had been left in front of the elevator to its original place.

・腹筋台の側に落ちていたカフスボタン

The cufflink that had fallen beside the sit-up bench.

ジャックが、このトリックに腹筋台を使ったというヒント。

It was a clue that Jack had used the sit-up bench in carrying out this trick.

エレベーター前に設置した時か、元に戻した時に落としたもの。

He must have dropped it either when he set the bench up in front of the elevator or when he returned it to its original place.

何よりジャックが犯人であるという証拠品。

More than anything, it was physical evidence proving that Jack was the culprit.

そして、今に至る…という訳です。

And that brings us to the present…

今回のトリックは、エレベーターの仕組みが分かれば簡単に解ける事件なのです。

This case is actually quite simple to solve once you understand how elevators work.

〈エピローグ〉〈Epilogue〉

ジャックを乗せたパトカーが、けたたましいサイレンを鳴らしながら、ラクーンシティの街明かりに消えていく。

The police car carrying Jack blared its siren as it disappeared into the light of Raccoon City.

残された３人…レオン、アーク、クレアは、それが完全に街に呑み込まれるまで見送っていた。

The three left behindー Leon, Ark, Claire－ watched it go until it was completely swallowed by the city.

「レオン、アーク…ありがとう。ちゃんと解決してくれて…。」

“Leon, Ark…thank you. For solving everything properly…”

その言葉とは裏腹にクレアの表情は曇っている。

Despite her words, Claire’s expression remained clouded.

被害者と加害者とはいえ、一遍に友人を失ってしまったクレアの気持ちを考えると、いたたまれない。

Victim and culprit though they were, thinking about how Claire had lost her friends all at once was heartbreaking.

「クレア、大丈夫か？」

“Claire, are you okay？”

レオンが落ち着いた声でクレアを気遣う。

Leon asks with a calm, gentle voice, showing concern for Claire.

「ええ、なんとかね…。」

“Yeah…somehow.”

弱々しくも笑顔を返すクレア。

Claire forces a faint smile in return.

しばらく、お互いを見つめ合い、無言の時が流れる…。

For a while, they simply gaze at each other as silence hangs between them…

「…え～っと、じゃあオレ、先に帰るわ！」

” …Uhh, well then, I’m gonna head home first！”

アークが突然、その場から立ち去ろうとする。

Ark suddenly tries to leave the scene.

「急にどうしたんだ？アーク。」

“What’s gotten into you all of a sudden, Ark？”

「オレ、邪魔みたいだからさ…。」

“I kinda feel like I’m in the way…”

レオンとクレアは、またお互いの目線を交わす。

Leon and Claire exchange glances once again.

「オレたちは、そんなんじゃあねぇよ。」

“It’s not like that between us.”

「そうよ！レオンは、ただの兄さんの知り合いなんだから‼」

“Yeah！ Leon’s just an acquaintance of my brother’s, that’s all!!”

慌てて弁解する２人にニヤニヤしながらアークが応える。

Grinning mischievously, Ark responds to the two as they hurriedly try to explain themselves.

「ど～だかな～？

まぁ、オレはもうこの件では用済みなんで退散するよ。

夜はまだまだこれからだぞ～お２人さん♪」

“How do I put it～？

Well, my job in this case is done, so I’ll be taking off.

The night’s still young for you two, you know～♪”

「アーク！」

“Ark！”

からかうアークをレオンは怒鳴りつける。

Leon shouts at the teasing Ark.

一瞬、レオンから逃げる素振りをし、振り向きもせず、そのまま後ろ手で手を振り…立ち去るアーク。

For a brief moment, Ark acts as if he’s running away from Leon.

Without even turning around, he waves a hand behind his back and walks off.

しばらくすると角を曲がったのか、呆然と見送る２人から、アークの姿は見えなくなってしまった。

After a while, he must have turned the corner, because Ark disappears from the sight of the two as they stand there watching blankly.

レオンはクレアの方を向くと、両手を広げ、首をすぼめてみせた。

Leon turns toward Claire, spreads his hands, and gives a little shrug.

クレアから、自然な笑みがこぼれる。

A natural smile finally spreads across Claire’s face.

「…良かった。クレアに笑顔が戻って。」

“…Thank goodness. Your smile’s back, Claire.”

レオンも応えるようにクレアに笑顔を返す。

Leon smiles back at her in return.

レオンのキラースマイルが炸裂

Leon’s killer smile strikes again

「…。」

一瞬でその笑顔に持ってかれるクレア。

Claire is completely swept away by that smile in an instant.

ドキドキ…ドキドキ…

Thump…thump

時が止まったかのような２人だけの時間…。

A moment shared by only the two of them, as if time itself had stopped…

次の言葉が見つからず、心臓の鼓動だけがシンクロする。

Unable to find the next words, only the beating of their heart’s echoes in sync.

ドキドキ…ドキドキ…

Thump…thump

その鼓動に耐えきれなくて、レオンは思わず口を開く。

Unable to bear the pounding in his chest, Leon finally speak up.

「…アイツ(アーク)に言われたからじゃあないけど…せっかくだからこの後、食事でもどう？」

“It’s not because Ark said anything, but…since we’re here, wanna grab something to eat after this？”

「…そうね♪ そういえばお腹ペコペコ。」

“…Sounds good♪ Come to think of it, I’m starving.”

「最近、見つけた良い店があるんだ♪ 〈 J’s bar〉っていう店なんだけど…。」

“I recently found a really good place♪ It’s a bar called J’s Bar…”

「知ってるわ！

前に兄さんの仕事仲間と飲みに行ったことがあるの♪ ラクーンシティでは有名なお店よね。」

“I know it！

I went there once with my brother’s coworkers♪ It’s a pretty famous spot in Raccoon City.”

「ここから歩いて行ける距離だし、行ってみるか？」

“It’s within walking distance from here, so wanna go？”

「…えぇ♪」

“…Yeah♪”

ゆっくりと歩きだす２人。自然に肩が並ぶ。

The two begin walking slowly, naturally falling into step beside each other.

しかし、すぐに立ち止まり、クレアの姿をもう１度眺めるレオン。

But Leon soon comes to a stop and looks at Claire once more.

「今日はやっぱりデートだった？

スカート姿のクレア…初めて見たから。」

“So…was today actually a date after all？

It’s my first time seeing you in a skirt, Claire.”

レオンがちょっと戸惑いながら聞いた。

Leon asks a little awkwardly.

「…ち、違うわよ。ジャックとはただの大学の同級生！

いつも断っていたけど、兄さんは出張だったし、暇だったから…食事だけして帰ろうと思っていたのよ…。」

“…N-No, of course not. Jack was just a classmate from college！

I always turned him down, but my brother was away on a business trip, and I was bored, so I figured I’d just have dinner with him and go home.”

慌てて否定するクレア。

Claire hurriedly denies it.

「…さっき、アークにオレのこと聞かれた時と同じ返事の仕方だな。」

“…That’s the same way you answered when Ark asked you about me earlier.”

ちょっと、しょげてみせるレオン。

Leon looks a little dejected.

「…そんな！

レオンは、レオンは…と・く…」

“…That’s not true！

Leon is…Leon is…speー”

「は～い、クレアさん！事情聴取が始まりますよ～‼ 署までご同行願いましょうか～？」

“Alriiight, Miss Claire！

Time for questioning to begin～!! Mind coming down to the station with us～？”

レオンとクレアの間を割ってやって来た２人の刑事が、クレアをパトカーに乗せる。

Two detectives’ step in between Leon and Claire and escort Claire into the police car.

「レオン、お前も一緒に来い！」

“Leon, you’re coming too！”

「へっ？」

“Huh？”

有無なく同乗させられるレオン。

Leon is forced into the car without any say in the matter.

甘～い雰囲気だった空気が一変。

The sweet atmosphere between them vanishes in an instant.

きっと、パトカーの後部座席のレオンとクレアの２人は←このような顔になっていたことでしょう。

The two of them sitting in the back of the police car were probably making faces like this .

「そりゃ、そうだよな～。クレア、第一発見者だもんな～💧」

“Well, yeah…makes sense. Claire was the one who found the body, after all～💧”

結局、２人のデートは事情聴取という名に変わり、お互いに多くの知り合いの警察官がいる…ラクーン警察署で行われることとなってしまいました。

In the end, their date turned into something called ‘questioning,’ and it ended up taking place at the Raccoon Police Department…where both of them knew far too many cops.

サイレンの音がレオンの頭に鳴り響く…。

The sound of the siren echoes through Leon’s head…

「…Story of my life…. 」→「泣けるぜ…。」

(クレア…オレのこと…とく…何だったんだぃ💦？)

(Claire…what was it you were trying to say about me…？ ‘Speー’ what？)

…一方その頃、

…Meanwhile, elsewhereー

「アイツら、今頃美味いものでも食っているかな～♡？」

“I wonder if those two are eating something good right about now～♡？”

…と、レオンのアパートに帰ったアークは、得意の料理に精を出していましたとさ💧

And so, after returning to Leon’s apartment, Ark happily threw himself into cooking one of his specialty dishes💧

今回この企画で、長年の夢…推理小説が書けました♪ (なんちゃって推理小説ですが…💧)

With this project, I finally got to fulfill a longtime dream of mine…writing a mystery novel♪ (Well…more like a pseudo mystery novel💧)

私は子供の頃から謎解きや推理小説が好きで、週刊少年マガジンで連載していた「金田一少年の事件簿」の犯人当てクイズで…なんと！最優秀賞を獲ったことがあるのです。(←これまでの人生で唯一の自慢)

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved puzzles and detective stories, and back when The Kindaichi Case Files was serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine, I actually won the grand prize in one of their ‘Guess the Culprit’ contests！ (My one and only bragging right in life)

でも、いくら謎解きが好きでも「推理小説を書く」ということは全く別のもの。

But no matter how much you love solving mysteries, writing a detective novel is a completely different thing.

新しいトリックを考えるのは大変だし(現時点でトリックは出尽くしてると言われてるし)

Coming up with a new trick is incredibly difficultー especially when people say that every trick imaginable has already been done by now.

シチュエーションの説明も文章で表現することはとても面倒。

And describing situations and scenes purely through writing is honestly a huge hassle.

私の乏しい文章力がトドメとなり、いつも途中で投げ出していました。

My poor writing skills were the final blow, and I always ended up giving up halfway through.

今回、なんとか話もまとまって、下手くそでも最後まで書き上げることが出来たのは、

This time, somehow, the story finally came together, and even with my clumsy writing, I was able to finish it all the way to the end.

…やはり、レオン・S・ケネディというキャラクターのおかげですね♫

…And honestly, that’s thanks to the character of Leon S. Kennedy♫

レオンがいたからアークもいて、クレアもいて…苦しくても、混乱して頭が爆発しそうでも、なんとかやり遂げることが出来ました。

Because Leon was there, Ark was there too, and Claire as well…Even when it got tough, and my brain felt like it was going to explode from all the confusion, I somehow managed to see it through to the end.

最後はいつも通り、悪い癖が出ておチャラけてしまったけど、結構本格的なミステリーになったと思います。

In the end, I slipped back into my usual bad habit and got a little too goofy, but I still think it turned into a pretty authentic mystery story.

私の能力不足で、説明が分かりにくい、状況が想像できない…という箇所が多々あったと思います。

Because of my lack of skill, I’m sure there were plenty of parts where the explanations were hard to follow or the situations were difficult to picture.
